Harrington Raceway Facts:
The Harrington Raceway, located in Delaware, is home to exciting harness horse racing action. It all started back one April some 58 years ago. In 2003, Harrington Raceway decided to reconstruct it's half-mile oval. To make sure the track was high-quality, they brought in two veteran trackmasters - Dan and Greg Coon. The new half-mile oval was lightning fast. The new design allowed for wider turns and the new track is much safer now. Harrington Raceway holds horse wagering action Sunday through Thursday. Harness racing takes place in the evening with the first post at 5:30pm.
1996 was an important year for Harrington Raceway. That year Delaware passed gaming legislation that allowed Harrington Raceway to have video lottery machines - also known as slot machines. Harrington Raceway wasted no time adding video lottery machines and they now have over 1,150 machines on the premises. Thanks to this new ability, purses at Harrington Raceway have increased. About 12% of the profit from the video lottery machines goes towards purses. Harrington Raceway has now established itself as a top track on the harness racing circuit.
The increase in purses have allowed local horsemen to increase their revenue and thus increase their horse racing environment. The end result is an increase in quality and better horse racing at Harrington Raceway. To help further local quality, Harrington Raceway gives Delaware owned or bred horses a generous 10% bonus on all Delaware owned or bred races. When harness horse racing fans think of great tracks around the country, Harrington Raceway is one of the first racetracks that comes to mind.
