The Woodbine Mile on Saturday, September 14 at Woodbine Racetrack just outside of Toronto, Ontario, Canada is one of the most eagerly-awaited betting races of the year! The race always draws a talented field of turf milers, and always has Breeders’ Cup implications.
The rewards are great: the race offers a $1 million purse, and the winner also earns a free bid to the Breeders’ Cup Mile. The rewards are great for horseplayers as well, and everyone looks forward to betting on the Woodbine Mile.
Three times in the last decade, including each of the last two years, the Woodbine Mile winner went on to take the Breeders’ Cup title. World Approval (2017), Modern Games (2022), and Master of the Seas (2023) are the last three horses to have swept that double. Court Vision (2011) and Wise Dan (2012, 2013) also recently swept both in the same year, and 2015 Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Tepin took the Woodbine Mile in 2016.

Woodbine Mile Win Candidates
There are two overseas mainstays in this field. Big Rock seems to be off form and tends to do better on the softer ground, something he will not likely get in Toronto. However, Naval Power is a serious threat for Charlie Appleby and William Buick, connections who have won the last two editions of the Woodbine Mile.
Naval Power missed by just a head in the Turf Classic (G1) at Churchill Downs; that was in May, but he has run well off a break. He can benefit from the cutback in distance, and he has done well on the firmer turf he should get at Woodbine. With tactical versatility and connections who know how to shine at Woodbine, he is a major contender.
The grand wild card in the 2024 Woodbine Mile is Playmea Tune for Canadian mainstay, trainer Jose Carroll. Playmea Tune tries the lawn for the first time ever in the Woodbine Mile, and stretches past 6 ½ furlongs for the first time as well. However, he is bred nicely for the turf, out of a mare who, despite being a Grade 3 winner on dirt, has already produced three grass winners.
Playmea Tune can work a tactical trip from an inside gate, and he is fast enough to stack up at this level. In short, if you want to single Naval Power and spread elsewhere, that’s a solid strategy. If you want to try for a price on top, in this field full of horses who are pretty well proven as not quite this level, side with Playmea Tune as the alternative with the most upside.
Woodbine Mile Exotics Horses
Usually a horse coming out of Canadian-bred company is suspect coming into a spot like this, but there are reasons My Boy Prince can be competitive.
The Mark Casse trainee has been running on all-weather most of the year, but last year he got some seasoning against Grade 1 horses on the lawn: he was second in the Summer (G1) over this course and distance, and also finished a close third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1). A return to turf could be just what he needs.
Filo di Arianna is excellent over the Woodbine course: he has raced five starts over it, winning each time. The question is class, as he tends to come up just short every time he steps up against horses who aren’t the usual Woodbine suspects. Even so, a regular day at the office for Filo di Arianna is good enough for a share of this, so it would be no surprise to see him nab a Grade 1 placing.
