Track History & Quick Facts
In the early 1970s, competition from other horse race betting venues and tracks took its toll on Dover Downs. To compensate for the loss, Dover Downs increased its motor sports schedule.
As is the case with many horse racing tracks, the arrival of slot machines - or video lottery machines as they are sometimes called - help increase the revenue of the track. The video lottery terminals helped the Dover Downs increase the purses. Eventually, the Dover Downs emerged as one of the top harness racing facilities in the country.
Dover Downs is no longer just a horse racing venue. It's a complete entertainment destination complete with horse race betting, casino games, hotel and performances. The Dover Downs Hotel has hundreds of rooms and a conference center. They feel it rivals anything Atlantic City or Las Vegas has to offer.
