Royal Ascot 2024: Washington Heights can outrun odds in Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee

Some of the top turf sprinters in the world will clash at Royal Ascot on Saturday, June 22 in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (G1)! The £1,000,000 race, covering six furlongs on a straight turf course, was previously the Golden Jubilee, Diamond Jubilee, and Platinum Jubilee in honor of the anniversaries of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, and then was renamed to its current name after she passed away in 2022.

The race, open to sprinters aged four and up, is the Group 1 feature on closing day of the Royal Ascot meeting. Some of the most important sprinters in recent times have triumphed in this race including Blue Point (2019), the Tin Man (2017), Starspangledbanner (2010), and even the great Black Caviar (2012). The American horse Undrafted (2015), long a star sprinter for Wesley Ward, had his star moment in this race as well.

Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Top Choice

Washington Heights keeps getting ignored by the bettors but he keeps showing out. He had a bit of second-itis in the handicap ranks last year, but a trip to Sweden for a listed race reminded him how to win. Both his races this year have been sharp: a Group 3 victory over likely favorite Mill Stream, then a half-length defeat to that foe last out after a less-than-perfect start. If he comes out of the stalls better, he could win at an overlaid price.

Queen Elizabeth II Contenders

Mill Stream is the “now” horse in this division and the favorite in antepost betting markets. A six-furlong specialist, he has been on song in both starts this year after getting off-season wind surgery. He was a close second to Washington Heights on his seasonal debut followed by a nose victory in the Clipper (G2) second-up, and as a four-year-old he has the upside to improve even further.

It isn’t uncommon to see a live horse from the King Charles III (G1) on opening day wheel back for this race on closing day, and Believing fits that bill. She was beaten only 1 ½ lengths in that opening day race, going five furlongs, and she has a listed win and a Group 3 win over six furlongs. With pace versatility and a proven liking for this firmer ground, she should run another good race.

Though Shouldvebeenaring hasn’t won in over a year, he is a proven six-furlong horse who often runs on for a piece of the action. He prefers better ground, something he will get in this spot, and should at least have an honest pace to rally into. He was second to likely favorite Mill Stream two starts back, a testament to his class, and should be able to find the frame again.

Queen Elizabeth II Long Shot

Quinault will be one of the longest shots on the board, but on his best he is fascinating. He went on a tear last year in handicap races, including wins over the likes of Mill Stream and Washington Heights. He has tactical speed, six-furlong form, and form over firmer ground, meaning if he rediscovers himself third off the lay he could continue the string of longshots running very well.
