The most anticipated jumps race of the year is coming up Saturday, April 13: the £1 million Grand National (G3) at Aintree! Covering four miles and two furlongs, it is one of the most eagerly-awaited betting horse races of the year. With a field of 34 horses allowed to run, there are always long shots who run well and it is a wagering experience like no other!
The history of the Grand National dates back to 1839, when Lottery won the Grand Liverpool Chase. Some of the best-loved horses over almost two centuries have won this race, none more beloved than three-time winner Red Rum (1973, 1974, 1977). More recently, the fan favorite Tiger Roll (2018, 2019) became a national hero by winning the race twice.
2023 winner Corach Rambler and 2022 winner Noble Yeats will both attempt to become the first multiple-time winner since Tiger Roll. Coming off a third-place run in the extremely prestigious Cheltenham Gold Cup, Corach Rambler comes into the race as one of the leaders on class. However, their foes include I Am Maximus, Meetingofthewaters, Vanillier, and Scottish Grand National winner Kitty’s Light, among many others.
Will one of these leading lights win, or will a new star emerge? Read on to find out.

Your best bet in the 2024 Grand National is to keep an eye on the prices at your chosen online racebook, and place your bet when you see an overlay: a price better than their true chance to win. Since online racebooks offer fixed-odds betting on major races, it is better than betting at the track since odds can shift all the way until post time at the track. By betting online, you can watch the race confident that you have the best price.

Now that you have your wagering account set up, it is time to get to know more about the major contenders in Great Britain’s most eagerly anticipated horse race of the year. These are the best horses to bet in the 2024 Grand National:
Grand National Market Leaders
The clear leader in the market is Corach Rambler. He won the race last year, and though horses rarely repeat, Corach Rambler comes in with shockingly good class for this race: last out he was a strong third in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, and the marathon distance and wet conditions should play right to his strengths.
Meetingofthewaters comes out of a third-place run in the Ultima Handicap Chase (G3) over heavy ground at Cheltenham. The race has good form as a National prep. Willie Mullins’ rocky record in this race raises some questions, as does the fact that he was slow to settle in the Ultima, but his stamina and form over wet going make him a contender if he settles a bit better. e is also much better weighted than stablemate I Am Maximus.
Grand National Mid-Priced Contenders
One of the newer faces in this crowd, Mahler Mission returns to the races for the first time since December. His form is on the upswing, though, and he ran a good second last out going three miles, two furlongs. The wet ground should suit him well, and though he fell late going three miles, six furlongs three starts back, he has gotten time to mature and his pedigree screams stamina.
Panda Boy is well weighted and comes into the Grand National in some of the best form of his career. Though he has not won under rules since May 2022, he has been close up in his last two starts at Leopardstown over three miles, half a furlong. He was a credible enough fifth over a marathon three miles, five furlongs last spring at Fairyhouse, also on soft ground, and can find the frame on his best.
Grand National Long Shot
Galia Des Liteaux bounced last out at Exeter, but if she finds what she found two back in a Grade 3 handicap chase at Warwick she shapes as a serious chance in exotics at an appealing price. That strong effort came over three miles five furlongs, a testament to her stamina, and also came over soft ground. At the end of a rainy National week, this looks like the kind of horse who can find her best.
