- News
The $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Saturday, November 2 at Del Mar Racetrack is one of the classiest races of the year. The top two-turn dirt fillies and mares in the world line up to go 1 ⅛ milee. It is also one of the best horse racing betting events of the year, given its large and classy field.
With the retirement of Idiomatic, Kentucky Oaks heroine Thorpedo Anna will be the favorite. However, she is facing older horses for the first time: including Raging Sea, who upset Idiomatic last out, as well as undefeated Japan-based mare Awesome Result. The rising star Sugar Fish and the consistently classy sophomore Candied also line up in the Distaff.
The list of winners in this race features some of the best mares ever: Personal Ensign, Inside Information, Zenyatta, and Beholder. Who will add their name to the list this year? Keep reading to find out, and to see the best places to bet on the Breeders’ Cup online!

Morning-line odds are not a guaranteed price, but rather an educated estimate of who is expected to take money or not. Odds on track are not finalized until the starting gates open. This means that if you bet at the track, late action on your horse means you’ll get lower odds than when you bet.
This is why betting the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at an online racebook is better. If you see an overlay on your horse, you can lock it in just by placing a bet, and then be confident on race day that you have locked in the best odds on your horse.

Breeders' Cup Distaff Handicapping
You’ve seen the list of runners, but who are the top contenders? To find out, let’s dive a little deeper. These are the best horses to use in your wagers for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff.
Breeders' Cup Distaff Top Pick
Thorpedo Anna, the Kentucky Oaks heroine, is the horse to beat in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Though she didn’t win her final prep by a huge amount, just a head, the race was on the short side for her at 1 1/16 miles and was intended as a waypoint to keep her fit between the Travers (G1) and the Breeders’ Cup.
Now Thorpedo Anna stretches back out to 1 ⅛ miles, her best and most proven distance. Her tactical speed will play well at Del Mar, she can run her race anywhere, and her usual race at this trip is good enough to win against even these older horses.
More Breeders' Cup Distaff Contenders
The top contenders to Thorpedo Anna include Japan-based shipper Awesome Result and up-and-coming Raging Sea.
Awesome Result makes her graded-stakes debut in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. However, she has shown immense consistency in Japan: seven starts, seven wins, all at 1 ⅛ miles or more, and all with fields of 12 horses or more. A horse with less credentials than her upset this race three years ago at Del Mar (remember Marche Lorraine?!), and though untested she cannot be taken lightly.
It may seem a bit strange to call Raging Sea up-and-coming since she is four, and raced in the Breeders’ Cup at two. But, she really only broke through against the best two back, when she upset Idiomatic in the Personal Ensign (G1). She does her best work at the Distaff distance of 1 ⅛ miles, and she is tactically versatile enough to work out a trip in this big field.
Breeders’ Cup Distaff Exotics Horses
The best local hope to invade exotics in the Distaff is Sugar Fish. An up-and-coming sophomore, she did not run her best two back in the Clement Hirsch (G1) over this course, but that was also her first try versus older. She set things right in the Zenyatta (G2) next out, closing into a pedestrian pace. A run back to that race makes her a threat underneath.
